Univ. Prof. Dr. Paul H.M. Spauwen was born on 22.10 1947. He studied Medicine at the University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands. After his training in General Surgery, he finished his training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1984 at the University of Groningen. In 1996, he got his professorship in Plastic Surgery at the University of Nijmegen up to 2010. Since then, after moving to Austria, he is member of the Team for Cleft and Facial Surgery of the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Wilhelminenspital, Vienna. (Head: Univ. Doz. Dr. Rupert Koller).
During his career, his main topics were congenital malformations, focused on cleft lip and palate surgery, and hand surgery. He is Past President of the Netherlands Society for Plastic Surgery as well as Past President of the Dutch Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Association. Apart from that, he was chairman of 8 Committees in the field of surgery and medical ethics.

In the scientific field, he was promotor for 14 theses and had 175 publications.
In the sociocultural field, he participated in humanitarian projects in Bangladesh, Indonesia and Sudan (2000-2019).
